The Moving Center

RH

A note from Dr. Hendrix

This poem imagines the brain as sheets of steel bolted together with no fixed center — and lands on honesty as the thing that lets those pieces flow into one. I wrote it because I have never felt like a single, settled self so much as a moving center, and I have found that only honesty keeps me whole.

Did you know that our brain did not grow All at once? A little here A little there and here we are. It’s like different sheets of steel being bolted together. That’s our brain. There’s no center to our brain. We go from sheet to sheet. There are those who work at hanging those sheets and turning them into pools which flow together. We see a moving center: It’s honesty that holds our brain together. Honesty turns over each day to courage. A gentle river comes to view, It’s love flowing through.
