Fixation

RH

A note from Dr. Hendrix

This poem traces how I fixated on my high school years, spun myths about them, and let that imagined past quietly distort my present — until I finally went back and faced it. I wrote it because the stories we will not stop telling about our youth can hold us hostage, and setting one down is a real kind of freedom.

I know the problem of fixation I fixed onto my high school years I created myths about those years My myths created an unfulfilled past My unfulfilled past distorted my present I became a distortion of myself I decided to revisit those years I faced my high school past My fixation began to let go My myths began to fall apart My distortion cleared up I began to see myself I started to be myself I am myself
