A note from Dr. Hendrix
This one came out as a poem — the confession of a boy who found reading hard and school harder, and who learned to slip through the crevices and cracks on wit alone. That B-minus on my graduation speech still stings a little. I wrote it because plenty of us succeed not by scaling the wall but by finding the small gap nobody else noticed.

Early, early on, reading was hard to do.
Arithmetic, math, algebra too.
.
I could pass a classroom test or two.
I’m one who slips through.
.
I’ve always been talkative,
a joker too.
.
By ninth grade I started cutting through.
I even entered the graduation speech contest.
.
My teacher gave me a B- on my essay,
and on my speech too.
.
She said good try,
but I can’t recommend your essay.
That meant my speech too.
.
I entered the contest anyway.
I sensed inside, It would end well.
.
And, it did.
I won!
.
All persons have cracks they can fit through.
That’s life – crevices, cracks and niches,
we all fit through one or two.
.
I fit through too!
