Five Lessons I Learned About Human Behavior As A Management Consultant

5 – In Business It’s Not Work For The Sake Of Work

Don’t look busy. That’s an insult to the idea of work. Work is searching out how processes can be performed more efficiently.

I learned as a Mormon missionary that the use of a bike in a barrio was just bike riding. Getting rid of a bike made me walk, and as I walked I met people on the sidewalk, in their front yards, in the grocery store, etc. that was the whole idea of missionary work wasn’t it? To meet people.

That carried over to consulting. If I wasn’t meeting people all the time, I was wasting my time just driving to and from appointments. The art of work is searching for ways to make new things, or make old things better, or talking to new people to see if they have new ideas that you can use.

When you understand its true purpose, work becomes sacred.
