Packed Them In For A ‘Chevy Chase’ Vacation

Well, I did it. I cleaned out my bank account and bought tickets for all thirteen of the family to go see the Utes play Oregon in the PAC 12 championship.

The game was held in the new Las Vegas football stadium.

We traveled in one of those new Sprinters that are half tank and half troop carrier. We traveled from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas.

At the game, we sat on the forty five yard line about fifteen rows up or so. Perfect for a game, except everyone in front of me stood up nearly the entire game. No, the ENTIRE game. If I bought a seat to sit in, I’m going to sit in it. So I sat there hearing the roar of the game but little if any of its action.

Finally, my youngest granddaughter, just turned four, leaned forward and said, “Grandpa, stand up.” Which I finally did.

Our team prevailed.

After the game, we started out for St. George where we have a condo, but not before someone shouts out, “In and Out Burger.” We pull up to one close to the strip. The line looked like a ride at Disneyland on Christmas Day. The line stretched around the building and then did two curly cues before we reached the window to order. After my son in law repeats the thirteen orders to the person at the window, thirteen corrections and addendums from thirteen brilliant little minds sitting in the back come forward all at once. After that, we finally settle down to soggy hamburgers made tolerable by the limp piece of lettuce and onion.

The road from Vegas to St George is dark, really dark. I’m sitting up front thinking I’m somehow helping my son in law (Dallin) navigate the road. I say, “I think we’re approaching the pass” (where all the gorgeous mountains are.) He responds patiently, “We just passed through them.” (And now you know why fathers in law are tolerated by sons in law).

We finally get to bed around 12:30 AM.
