How Our Brains Work

RH

A note from Dr. Hendrix

This is a peek inside my own head — where I see pictures instead of words, feel before I reason, and use language like a chess move. I wrote it because I suspect a lot of us work this way without ever saying so, and naming it has helped me understand both myself and everyone I try to talk to.

This is how my brain works . . . (Probably how yours works too.)

In conversation, when you speak to me,
– I see pictures, not words

I have emotional reactions
– before I have rational ones

I dream in images
– not in words or paragraphs

If I can’t draw or diagram it,
– I don’t really understand it

When communicating with another,
– I think of which words will work best

I use language as chess to
– accomplish my goals
