Someone once compared me to Tommy Shelby, of all people — a knack for conjuring opportunity out of thin air, like the garage and rooms I somehow added to a first home that had “no there there.” I wrote it because I have come to see that talent for making something from nothing as the truest gift I was given.

There
was our first home
without a garage
You know,
no there
there.
You could not hammer a nail.
Yet,
there
appeared a new garage there:
plus an entry way,
a new bedroom
and family room
there.
A lot of there there
That’s your talent,
creating opportunity
hatched
from what seems to be
only thin air.
With five children,
you quit your job in search
of new opportunity
out there.
Then you show up
with a lot of money
and said, “there.”
“There
will be
more money coming
from out there,”
you said.
“But from where?”
I asked.
“From where
does
this money
come? Where
is out there?”
“Out there,”
you said,
motioning
with your arm and finger pointing
straight out into the
air.
And so it’s been.
There’s
been a lot of opportunity
created from
thin air.
