This little poem circles a quiet realization — that I can no more remember my childhood worries than I can, now, hold onto the ones that troubled me for decades. I wrote it because our concerns feel so permanent while we carry them and vanish so completely afterward, and there is a strange comfort in that.

When I was
as young
as I can remember,
I can’t remember
any concern
I might have had.
I can’t remember
crying,
complaining,
cussing –
I just can’t remember
any concern
I might have had.
decades have now passed,
I have had
my concerns.
I have
cussed,
complained
and cried.
Yet,
right now
I can’t remember
those concerns.
I am
as I was
when I was
young.
