I keep asking how anyone could have believed in Hitler, and answering myself with a harder question: how could they not, given the trances we all fall into. This poem is about the spells that beliefs and even music cast over us. I wrote it because the first step out of any trance is daring to challenge the very things we’re most certain of.

How could anyone have believed in Hitler, I ask How could anyone not I respond Look at the trances we trap ourselves in   Beliefs cause the trances we ensnare ourselves in With music it deepens the trances we’re in Trances become locked in within   We do thoughtless things in the trances we’re in Irrational and violent things In those trances we find ourselves in   How do we wake up from the trances we’re in By challenging the beliefs we believe in That dispels the trances we’re in   Will there be someone who challenges what we believe in There’s always someone with the strength within To challenge the trances we fail to know we’re in
