A note from Dr. Hendrix
I have thought about what my last words might be, and this piece imagines one: a grandchild telling me they are gay, and me answering with nothing but love. I wrote it because if I get to choose the note I go out on, I want it to be the one I was loved with — unconditional, unafraid, and glad for whoever you are.

You always hope your last words will be your best words
for we never know what comes afterwards.
I can see the day
when you could come and say
Grandpa, I am gay.
I will smile and say
there is no problem with you being gay.
Enjoy your life and know
it is not show.
When I say I love
you with the same love of
which I was loved.
This is the greatest of all truths, isn’t it: love
others, as you would want to be loved.
