Let’s Try Something New

You have to hand it to us Americans. We keep working at achieving racial harmony and equality. Compared to slavery and segregation, we’ve made progress, but we’re not there yet.

So, let’s try something new. Let’s give economic power directly to Americans.

Give $1k a month to every citizen living here. That would cost around $3 t. a year, or $320 b. a month. The only requirement would be that we would have to spend it each month. That’s putting awesome power in the hands of the people. Who would it help the most? Those who need money the most.

As long as they spend it, the economy will continue to grow. That’ll make business happy. As a result it will keep politicians in toe, which in turn will keep law enforcement in line.

This is an idea that my family has seen work in different forms in smaller countries. The United Arab Emirates does this. Chile does a form of this. It works.

Andrew Yang is the first presidential candidate to propose it in the democratic presidential primaries this cycle. The Trump administration has tried a form of this during our Covid-19 crisis in the form of a stimulus.

People don’t stop working. If anything, they try to make more money. If you have a family of four, that would be $4k a month. You put that on top of a person making $30k a year, that would be $78k, a year. Now the family has some breathing room.

I’m a capitalist. This is not socialism, it is in the words of my oldest son, “people’s capitalism.”

I think people’s capitalism is an idea whose time has arrived. And, who are the people? Every citizen of America.
